The spider wove a web over the "lingam" to protect it, whereas the snake took the gemstones from the "naaga-land" to decorate the lingam. The elephant took the river water to clean/bathe the lingam. But, the three were unaware of each others' existence, therefore each of them considered itself to be the sole guardian to the lingam. With each of them coming at different times daily, of course the spider and the snake got furious whenever they see their webs and the decorated precious stones got washed away, without knowing, from the elephant's conduct of cleansing the lingam everytime with river water.

IN ALL OVER SHIVA TEMPLES IT IS THE FIRST
Though a small village, historically it is very important, because it has a beautiful Siva Temple which is popularly known as "the Parasurameswara Temple."
The main importance of the temple lies in the Linga which is housed in the Garbhagriha of the temple and considered unique for its naturalistic depection . This is supposed to be the earliest Linga discovered so far and it has been assigned to the 3rd century. The name of the temple is mentioned as Parasurameswara Temple in the inscriptions. These inscriptions do not refer to the original builders of the temple. But they register the gifts made to the temple like land, money and cows for the conduct of daily worship in the temple. The Black and Redware sherds of the 2nd or 3rd century AD have been brought to light during the course of excavations conducted in 1973. Potsherds of the Andhra Satavahana period (Circa 1st century AD to 2nd century AD) and large sized bricks measuring 42+21+6 cms. of the same period have also been found. Hence some historians assign the temple to the Satavahana period.

As seen from the spate of agitations and chaotic situation during the last two months, the State is in the grip of ‘Rahu and Kethu’ (the mythological serpents indicative of bad omen), says P.A. Raman, the Asthana Siddhanthi of Kanipakam Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka temple. Another similar feature, ‘Elnaati Sani’ is also in vogue for the State, country and the entire world, he added while reacting to the incident.

The collapse of the Srikalahasti Raja Gopuram in 2010, the fall of a ‘Kalasam’ in 2012 and a portion in 2013 are all indicative of a bad sign, for which the Devasthanam will have to perform certain purification rituals. “The ‘Rahu Kethu  will be over by September 2013 and the State will remain united and surge in the path of progress.

It is one of the important ancient Shiva Kshetras (Shiva Temples) of Southern India. The Srikalahasti Temple occupies the area between the river bank and the foot of the hills and is popularly known as Dakshina Kailasam. The three lofty Gopurams of the temple are remarkable for their architecture. This temple was originally built during Pallava period and current structures are built by Chola Tamil King Kulothunga Cholan I,II and III during 11th century. A huge hundred pillared mantapam is built by  Sri Krishnadevarayar during 16th century which is another important feature of this shrine.
It is one of the ancient temples included in the Saiva pilgrimages and the site of a famous Shiva temple with magnificent gopurams and is fairly close to the famous hill temple of Lord Venkateshwara at Tirupati, one of the richest and famous temple cities in the world. It is also the origin of the popular textile painting art called kalamkari.
